As of August 9, the Red Sox hold a four-game advantage over the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East division and a big reason for that is Chris Sale. Acquired from the Chicago White Sox in December of 2016, Sale has been dominant in his first season with Boston. The 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher finished in the top six of Cy Young voting in each of the past five seasons and is one of the favorites to win the award in 2017. Through 23 starts, Sale led the American League in wins (14), earned run average (2.57), and strikeouts (229).

After allowing seven runs in a start against the Cleveland Indians, Sale bounced back on August 8 with a dominating 13-strikeout performance against the Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed only two hits in the 2-0 victory, which brought the Red Sox winning streak to seven games. Sale, who was named to the All-Star Game for the sixth consecutive season, now boasts a career record of 88-54 and has 1,473 strikeouts in 1,271 innings.
